I really enjoy working one-on-one with individuals looking for personal attention for their creative projects. I have a craft-focused approach to writing, and my feedback on your work is insightful and practical.
For package services listed below, I ask for partial payment (non-refundable) before we begin.
Poem Packet Review ($250)
A group of poems (up to 10 pages). I will read and provide specific written comments and suggestions for your work and we will discuss my feedback in a 30-minute phone call.
Low Residency Semester ($1,000)
Six packet exchanges in a flexible independent study format, over the course of 6-8 months. Each packet may include up to 5 poems (new or revisions). You will receive detailed written comments about your work, as well as fun writing prompts to create new work. I may also suggest books for you to read (poetry collections, essays on craft) to deepen your studies and guide you to explore new directions. The semester also includes five 30-minute phone conversations about your work. Must be completed within one year.
Let’s create a format that works for you and your project! Together, we will design a mentorship to suit your particular project or timeframe and create a custom contract that will work best. This is usually how I work with former students and other poets.
For these services and other tailored short-term projects, I charge an hourly rate and bill in fifteen-minute increments. Payment plans are no problem! Please contact me for further details.
“I can always count on Melanie for in-depth and high quality feedback on my poems. I have found both her written and verbal critiques to be thought-provoking and encouraging. Her mentoring has made all the difference in helping me develop and hone my poetry writing skills, and I look forward to continuing to work with her. I highly recommend Melanie's services to poets who are serious about improving the art and craft of their writing.”
“Melanie is an amazing, motivating coach and skilled poet. She helped me reach my goals and recognize new ones that evolved from our work together. Our phone conversations and her feedback on my work were very insightful and a tremendous help to my growth as a poet and writer. I grew more in our time together than I ever would have on my own."
